It's back! The magnificent Humber Street Sesh returns this weekend and it looks set top be bigger, louder, more energetic and more impressive than ever. As over 30,000 people hustle their way through the streets around Hull Marina, there is nothing short of a feast of musical, artistic, theatrical and cultural treats to enjoy. Hundreds of bands, artists and performers are joined by food vendors, skaters, stall holders, and more as they take part in Hull's biggest and best festival. If you've never been before you're missing out on one of Hull's very best annual events. If you have been before you already know this.
Like so many people in Hull, and further afield, I'm always excited when the Humber Street Sesh comes around. It's a great opportunity to see some of the extensive pool of talent on offer in Hull, all in one place. In recent years I've painted live on the Speak Easy stage, working alongside some amazing acts in the process.
This year I will be doing something a little different as I'm unveiling a new series of canvases titled 'Hulls Modern Music Icons', a collection of paintings I've been working on for the last few months. An initial collection of nine mixed media canvases will be unveiled, with a further six canvases being added to the collection as it tours around various venues in Hull over the next few months. Details of other venues will be announced after Humber Street Sesh.
The collection is a series of modern, impressionistic portraits depicting some of the most influential musicians, promoters and figures from within the music scene in Hull. Some of the faces you will no doubt recognise, while others may be more illusive, as the subjects I've chosen are not necessarily the most widely known, but their impact on the Hull music scene is unquestionable.
Hulls Modern Music Icons is the first collection of paintings I've put together for around three years and one that has until this weekend been kept almost entirely under wraps, even from the subjects themselves. The brilliant new Butler Whites bar, which opens its doors this weekend, will be home to the paintings, so if you get the chance to pop in as you move between the various Humber Street Sesh stages please do, and grab a beer or two while you're there.
